Description: The Pew Scholars Program program provides funding to young investigators of outstanding promise in science relevant to the advancement of human health. It is open to individuals with a doctorate in medicine or biomedical sciences. As of November 1, 2010, nominees must hold full-time appointments at the rank of assistant professor or equivalent. On July 1, 2011, they must not have been in such an appointment for more than three years, whether or not such appointments were on a tenure track. Pew Scholars may not simultaneously be supported by similar private foundation awards during the first two years of the Pew grant.

UM Nominations Process: Please provide for internal nomination:
  1. Cover page including nominee's name, Department & contact information, abstract of the proposed research.
  2. Self-Assessment & Project Description (2-3 pages): Include a brief description of applicant's most significant research contribution to date. Provide a brief synopsis of the proposed research highlighting its particularly creative and risk-taking aspects. Include a statement of how the receipt of the Pew Scholarship would benefit the applicant and why the applicant’s research is personally significant to them.
  3. Curriculum Vitae of nominee.
  4. If the applicant is chosen to move forward, Pew would require three letters of reference from 1) Graduate School Advisor 2) Postdoctoral Advisor 3) Scientific reference from an individual in the Applicant's field. This referee should be familiar with the applicant's work, but not a current collaborator, not at the same institution and not a former fellowship advisor of the applicant. Please list these three referees including their name, University affiliation, discipline.

Selection Process
  • Once the internal deadline has passed, the status will change to “In Review” and proposals will undergo review.
  • If there are multiple applicants, the office managing the nomination will determine the review criteria and coordinate the review process.
  • Once review has been completed all parties will be notified via email.
  • Nominees will be provided with a letter addressed to the sponsor from the OVPR indicating that they are the university's nominee. This letter should accompany the nominee's proposal.
  • SPA is notified of the university's nominee(s) and the status is updated to “PI Selected”.
